Michigan's warm spell of recent days is coming to a chilly close on the first official day of spring.
The National Weather Service says unseasonably cold air out of the northwest will move across the Lower Peninsula on Saturday. Highs statewide will range only in the mid-30s to lower 40s.
Some snow or mixed rain and snow is expected Saturday, mainly along and south of Interstate 96. Less than 2 inches is expected to accumulate.
But with conditions remaining dry in the northern Lower Peninsula, the state Department of Natural Resources and Environment is issuing a limited number of outdoor burn permits.
High winds Friday forced Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie to postpone its 40th annual burning of a snowman effigy to welcome spring. The ceremony has been rescheduled for Monday.
