Three southeast Michigan school districts have voted to trim their budgets.
The Wayne-Westland Community Schools Board voted 5-2 Monday night to close six elementary schools next year. The 13,000-student district also will reconfigure classes, offer all-day kindergarten and seek concessions from 850 teachers and unionized employees. The district faces an $11 million deficit.
The Livonia school board voted 7-0 to lay off 47 employees as part of an effort to shave $4.3 million from an $8 million deficit. Cuts in the 16,500-student district will affect 13 teachers and include closing an adult education center and reducing physical education, athletic and music programs.
Brighton Area Schools voted 6-1 to approve cutting $14.8 million from its $57 million annual budget in 2010-2011.
