Mayor Dave Bing says Detroit needs direct assistance from the federal government to help demolish 70,000 abandoned structures in the city and spur job creation.
Bing participated Thursday in a jobs and economic growth summit at the White House.
He says President Barack Obama "has a game plan, and his administration is receptive to input and ideas that will help create jobs in Detroit and across the country."
Detroit is facing a budget deficit of at least $300 million and is in danger of running out of money. Bing is cutting jobs and has persuaded some unions to take a 10 percent wage cut to help reduce the deficit.
The city's 28 percent unemployment rate is among the highest in the nation and above the national rate of just over 10 percent.
