The Michigan State Police say a multi-agency coordinated sweep to catch sex offenders who had not verified their home addresses with local police led to the arrests of 196 people.
State Police also say 682 additional arrest warrants were requested during the state's fifth such sweep Oct. 20 to Oct. 31.
A total of 2,200 offenders had been arrested in four previous Operation Verify sweeps since 2005.
Under state law, convicted sex offenders must register with local police agencies and verify on a regular basis that they still live at the same address. Failing to comply carries penalties ranging from 93 days to four years in prison.
