Mourners found comfort in happy memories of a Monroe County couple who died within a day of each other after 73 years of marriage.

Emil and Genevieve Schultz were buried side by side Thursday in Milan, where they lived in the house Emil built in 1938 and ran a business now in its fourth generation of family ownership.

The couple was in their 90s when Genevieve died Saturday and Emil died the next morning. They had four children, all of whom live in the Milan area, and 11 grandchildren, nine of them area residents.

Emil was hospitalized and had been given just days to live when Genevieve was found dead in her home by their eldest son, Marvin. He tells The Monroe Evening News he thinks she died of a broken heart.

Love is when two hearts become one. This story is certainly proof of that. They were so blessed to have that kind of love.

Awww this story is great. Thank you for sharing. It is quite nice after reading most of the headlines. Nothing like a good life, lovig someone for that long and being able to be buried together. That's sweet.

I think it is great that this couple lived together as man and wife for such a long time. I wish more people could make a go of marriage. My parents have been married for 57 years and I am so thankful that they are still together. Mom and Dad are currently awaiting the births of their 22nd & 23rd great-grandchildren the first of next year. My congratulations also to the couple in New Carlisle for such a long and prosperous marriage.

Not to out do anyone here. But my wife's grandparents lived in New Carlisle. Her grandfather just passed away two weeks ago. He was 96. Grandma still survives at the age of 94. They just celebrated their 74th wedding anniversary back in June. They have been a fixture in the New Carlisle community for a very long time. Grandpa will be missed. Even after 74 year of marriage they were very much still in love. Grandpa would do anything for his Toots. They still held hands when they went out. That is something quite special and a lesson we could all learn from. There is nothing a couple can not over come. Everyone should want to achieve the same.
