A tissue plant in Cheboygan has reached a deal with the state to resolve longstanding air and water quality violations.
Great Lakes Tissue Co. has promised to pay 250,000 dollars and change its operations to prevent further pollution.
The company and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality agreed in 1997 to bring the plant into compliance with state law. But the DEQ says the company didn't follow through.
The settlement announced this week resolves violations that include dumping untreated water into the Cheboygan River, having uncovered coal and ash piles on the site, and exceeding limits on mercury discharges.
It also clears the way for an investor in Green Bay, WI, to purchase the plant and continue operations in Cheboygan.
