Advocates for universal health care in Michigan will start a petition drive Tuesday to put a proposal before the voters in November.

A group of health care, labor and civil rights activists plans to collect 475,000 signatures by July 7 as part of an effort to get the state constitution amended.

If passed, The Detroit News reports the measure would require lawmakers to come up with a solution for the state's 1.1 million uninsured residents.

John Freeman, chairman of the Michigan Health Care Security Campaign, says reforming health care will help restructure the state's economy and allow businesses to remain competitive.

http://www.healthcare-now.org/single_payer_faqs.html To Not my Tax Dollars: You already pay for it, and a single payer system is cheaper than the health care you have now because it would cut administrative fees that take up 15-25% of every dollar used. You already pay for you employer supplied health insurance and for the medicare taxes, with a single payer system you would just pay the normal medicare tax, a savings to you not only for what you pay now, but from the out of pocket expenses like co-pays and prescription drugs. Look into what the link I provided would do, before you start sprouting about welfare reciepients, they aren't the only people who benefit from universal health care.

"John Freeman, chairman of the Michigan Health Care Security Campaign, says reforming health care will help restructure the state's economy and allow businesses to remain competitive" Wow how will that happen? Who will pay for this healthcare? I pay my own health insurance, not cheap, but why should I pay for someone else's? I may accept a WPA type program, which removes people from welfare, places them in public works jobs and pay them a decent wage. A benefit of that would be healthcare---Wait a minute, they already qualifiy for that without working, what was I thinking?
