A lawyer says he has filed an appeal to try to overturn a prison sentence ordered for former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Kilpatrick has been behind bars since May for violating probation in a 2008 criminal case that ended his time at city hall. A Wayne County judge says he must serve at least 14 months in prison for failing to report assets and other financial misdeeds.
Attorney Arnold Reed says he filed an appeal Wednesday. He calls the sentence illegal and excessive.
In a separate case, Kilpatrick is awaiting trial on federal fraud and tax charges related to how he spent money from a nonprofit fund.
