Crews working to demolish former Republican mayoral candidate Wayne Curry's old home hit a gas line Monday morning.
Firefighters and NIPSCO were called to the intersection of Burns Ave. and South Bend Ave. around 11:00 a.m.
An initial assessment found evacuations were not needed because strong southern winds allowed for quicker dissipation.
At one point, the City of South Bend tried to take Curry's home through eminent domain to create access for a new subdivision. Curry filed a civil suit, which was ultimately settled out of court last month.
Crews said the gas line was improperly marked, which led to the leak.
The street was reopened shortly before 1:00 p.m.
