About 20 people gathered Thursday evening to remember Deshone Caradine, 42, who was stabbed to death last month.
The group offered several prayers for Caradine and her family, while also hoping for an end to the violence.
"I believe strongly in the power of prayer, but along with prayer you also need people who can control their emotions more and you can pray all you want, but I think sometimes it's got to come from the individual," said Michael Elliott, who organized the vigil.
Two weeks ago, the father of one of Caradine's children, Manuel Clemon, 44, was charged with her murder.
Police said Clemon fled to Chicago using Caradine's car following the murder. He was arrested a few days later.
