The NCAA Tournament has turned Skylar Diggins from a South Bend superstar into a national superstar. In our exclusive 1-on-1 conversation, Skylar talks about that among other topics heading into national title game.
Angelo: You've done the rounds of interviews, how sick are you of guys like me right now?
Skylar: Oh it's just a part of it (laughing). You have to take it all in stride and understand if you do big things like we are doing, people are going to want to hear about it. We've done our interviews and now we have to get focused and get ready for the game.
Angelo: You've blown up on twitter. Lil Wayne gave you a shoutout and calling you his wife...
Skylar: Oh man.
Angelo: What was that like?
Skylar: I didn't know I was married. That's a part of it too I guess. The social media---before the tournament started, I had 5,000 followers now I have 34,000. So a lot of people must have been watching college basketball. That just says a lot about women's college basketball. You've got the best rapper alive tweeting to you and not just to you, but good luck to the Fighting Irish. That says a lot. Everyone's watching.
Angelo: You've been the South Bend Superstar.... this tournament has made you a national superstar. What's that like?
Skylar: It just humbles me. You can't just accept on my behalf. I couldn't have done this without my teammates and coaching staff. And then the trainers and managers, the community and fans.
Angelo: What would it mean to end this season---your sophomore campaign with a national championship.
Skylar: It would mean a lot. I can't even put into words. People would say 'you all will be ok this year but next year is your all's year.' But I think what this team has accomplished--beating UConn and Tennessee in the same year. We've done historic things. Nothing would be a better taste in our mouths than winning a national championship.
Skylar and Notre Dame face Texas A&M in the national championship game tonight at 8:30 at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indy. NewsCenter 16 will have continuing coverage LIVE from Indy all day long.
