A gunman surrendered to police after a 14 hour standoff late Monday night, which began with a domestic disturbance.

Edwardsburg-Ontwa Township Police would not identify the man who barricaded himself in his ex-wife's home, however multiple sources identified the man as Mike Long.

A friend told NewsCenter 16 she received a text from Long when she was sleeping around 5:30 a.m., which said why he appreciated her friendship and "always remember that". The friend later told police she was concerned he may hurt himself.

The incident began as a domestic disturbance between Long and his ex-wife around 9:30 a.m. Monday morning in a home near the intersection of Redfield Street and Ebersole Road. His ex-wife was able to leave the home and told police Long was armed with a gun and he refused to come out.

Cass County Deputies and Michigan State Troopers spent hours communicating with the man, but were initially unable to talk him out. Around 5:00 p.m. deputies from Berrien County relieved many of the deputies who had been on the scene since the morning.

As night fell, police began sporadically using sirens and horns around the home. Officers could also be heard on a bullhorn, but Long still would not come out.

Around 9:45 p.m. utility workers arrived on the scene and helped police cut power and gas to the home. Police then continued sporadically sounding sirens and horns until 11:10 p.m. when officers threw several flashbangs outside the home. Flashbangs are designed to temporarily stun a suspect by flashing a bright light and making a loud noise.

Around 11:30 p.m., Long surrendered to police and was taken to the Cass County Jail. Police said Long would also undergo a mental evaluation.

Police said they did not enter the home because they did not want any harm to come to Long or any officers.
