Michiana native to be Sports Illustrated swimsuit cover model

The Sport Illustrated swimsuit issue cover model has been announced and she has ties to Michiana.

Michigan native, Kate Upton, has been selected as the cover model.

She was born in St. Joseph and is the niece of Congressman Fred Upton.

Kate’s father Jeff is the athletic director at Niles High School and was in NYC with Kate at the taping of Late Night with David Letterman, where the announcement was made.

Kate, 19, appeared along with nine other supermodels to deliver the Late Show Top 10 Reasons Why This is the Best Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition Ever. Kate read reason #2 "The art department was able to airbrush my mustache."

Upton was then revealed as the swimsuit cover, her giant image appearing outside the Late Show studios in Manhattan.

Jeff Upton tells NewsCenter 16 he will spend the next few days in New York with his daughter.
