An Edwardsburg man is clinging to life after an acquaintance shot him twice at a Cass County home. It happened at 12:05 p.m. Sunday in the 70000-block of 5 Points Road in Mason Township.
On Monday, the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office charged Kevin Vint, 40, of Elkhart with Attempted Murder, Assault With Intent to Murder and two counts of Felony Firearm.
Appearing before Cass County 4th District Court Judge Stacey Rentfrow, Vint tried talking his way out of a $300,000 bond. He cited good past behavior and the need to make money at work. However, after careful consideration, Judge Rentfrow denied Vint's argument.
"I am not going to cause anymore problems. I do not have another gun. I mean if there is anyway that I can go to work to do my job. I mean I would absolutely take care of all of this. I'm a very honest person,” Vint said via teleconference.
In court Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz said Vint allegedly shot the victim, Trevor Claire, 44, after a long drawn out fight over the same woman. Fitz said both men had exchanged words in person prior to Sunday’s shooting.
"There are also indications of premeditation, including, as I mentioned before, an ongoing squabble. Some electronic communications which suggested, a female individual who both the defendant and the victim had some past contact with,” Fitz said.
According to Captain Lyndon Parrish, five men, including Vint and Claire, were working on their cars inside a heated barn on a remote 60-acre property. That’s when at least two eyewitnesses say Vint pulled out a pistol and shot Claire two times.
One of the bullets pieced the Claire in the leg, the other sliced through his chest before ricocheting down to his liver and kidney. A friend close to Claire’s family told NewsCenter 16 one of the bullets also struck an artery, causing massive blood loss.
"The defendant did indicate briefly that he's not a violent person. We strongly disagree with that based upon not his words, but the facts in this matter. Also your honor, I would note that concerning his past record, he does have two prior criminal convictions in the late 1990's,” Fitz added.
According to Indiana Department of Correction records, Vint was convicted in 1993 and 1995 for DWI offenses. Twelve years later in 2003, Vint received another conviction after he failed to appear in court.
Unless Vint posts his $300,000 bond, he'll remain behind bars at the Cass County Jail until his next court date on Feb. 1.
As of Monday night, Claire remained in critical condition at Memorial Hospital. Doctors there say things are so dire; they’ve given the father of two a one-percent chance of survival. If Claire does not make it, this shooting would become Cass County’s first homicide of 2012.
