Most kids have quite the imagination, but then there’s Madie Flores, 10, a girl who's lived for a fairytale ending.
When Madie was seven, doctors diagnosed her with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Madie had no guarantee of survival.
While battling Leukemia, Madie wished for her own castle.
"I kind of wanted something that would last forever,” Madie said.
Self-proclaimed Grand Rapids handyman Aaron Edwards grabbed his tools and answered her call.
"I would love to build something like that and if it's for a little girl who knows what she wants, okay,” Edwards said.
"She was like, ‘Really, someone is going to give me something for being sick?’” Madie’s mother Mary Flores recalled.
Soon Madie's vision was sketched onto professional blueprints which called for a two-story castle with a drawbridge and all.
'It’s so tall, just under 15 feet,” Edwards added.
Now one more than a year later, her dream finally came true Thursday afternoon when the castle was installed in her own backyard.
"It was a little hard for me at the hospital, but then I was so happy to see this castle. I guess I would forget about it a little bit,” Madie said.
"It’s hard to thank everyone, but I don't think people do it for the thanks,” Mary Flores added.
And so, if there's a moral to this fairytale of a story, simply learn to dream big.
"I’ve got my own house! I’ll let my kids play in it and then their kids will have it,” Madie concluded.
Earlier this year, Madie underwent her final chemotherapy treatment. After a nearly three-year-long fight, doctors say she is now cancer-free.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan sponsored Madie's dream. It's also helped 6400 other Michigan kids do the very same since being founded in 1984.
