A typical school day for high school students includes math, science and English. And at Jimtown High School, they've added a period that provides a bit of a break from the normal grind.
Kids are learning about stock markets, ballroom dancing and home repairs.
Those are just some of the new subjects the kids can study as part of the school's "discovery" period.
The initiative just won a $1,000 grant from Martin's Supermarkets "One School at a Time" program.
Ballroom dancing and aerobics are among the close to 30 different subjects the kids can choose from as part of the school's discovery period.
Special Education teacher Blair Garceau says the teachers pick the subjects they want to teach, and they often get as much out of the class as the students.
“It's something different, and it’s something they're interested in doing, so it makes it fun for them,” Garceau said.
However, it can get expensive. That's why the grant money is so appreciated.
The Jimtown teachers share skills and hobbies that are good lessons for life and budgets.
The home repair class is something most adults would love to take.
The discovery classes aren't graded, which means the pressure is off, and they're learning for fun.
Last year, Jimtown was selected as an "Emerging Model School" for the state of Indiana, because of the school's work in helping kids succeed inside and outside of the classroom.
You can still nominate a school for a "One School at a Time” grant.
The winning school gets $1,000 from Martin's Supermarket, and a new winner is picked each month.
Schools only need to apply once, and you can do so by going to www.michianaschools.com.
