Wednesday, hundreds of family, friends, and even Mayor Buttigieg came to see him retire.
He's been the South Bend Fire chief for nearly five years, but has been at that station for more than 38 years.
Buchanon plans on taking the next two to three months off away from the fire service.
He and the fire department also welcomed Steve Cox as the 13th fire chief for South Bend.
