It was a scary situation Thursday moring at a Mishawaka middle school, after reports surfaced that a student brought a hand grenade inside the bulding.

However, that potential threat ended up just being a World War II replica of the weapon.

St. Joseph County Police and the South Bend Police Department bomb squad swarmed the campus of Grissom Middle School Thursday morning just after 10 a.m.

Police say a group of students told school administrators that one of their peers was storing what they believed to be a hand grenade in a backpack his locker, and had been showing it to other students.

School officials moved the backpack outside and away from the school, where the bomb squad determined the alleged grenade was fake and not a threat.

The 12-year-old boy reportedly cooperated with officials during the investigation and told officers he had only brought the replica to school so he could show his friends.

The student was later released into his mother's custody, as school resource officers continued their investigation.
