"From dust we came, to dust we shall return." With those words, Catholics around the world Wednesday started the Lenten season.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, and the faithful were in churches, like St. Matthew's Cathedral in South Bend, having their foreheads marked with ashes.
Monsignor Michael Heintz told NewsCenter 16, it prepares people for Christ's resurrection on Easter Sunday. "Lent is marked by practices of prayer, fasting and alms giving," he said. "The church throughout the whole world, Catholics, are praying, fasting and giving alms together in unity."
The ashes serve as a reminder to humble our hearts and remember that life passes here on earth.
Catholics also abstain from meat on Ash Wednesay, Good Friday and all the fridays of Lent.
