April marks Child Abuse Prevention month, and a local group in Elkhart is doing all the can to make sure no child ever has to suffer abuse.
Child and Parent Services in Elkhart works with victims of abuse to help them recover, families to help them understand how to deal with anger and hard times, and new parents dealing with stress. The center offers parenting classes, works with a service to support foster children, and child protective services when it comes to helping victims.
CEO and President Of CAPS Candy Yoder said, "Child abuse is an ugly fact that happens. It usually happens in secret, and the public isn't aware of it. But we know that child abuse can be prevented. Child abuse doesn't have to happen, and if parents have the right tools and the right support, they can do things the right way."
The group serves hundreds of families and abused children every month. This month, they're holding several events to encourage the community and families to be proactive in preventing child abuse.
The last Friday in April, April 29, is Wear Blue for Kids Day. The public is asked to wear blue to show their support for children and healthy family relationships. They'll also be holding an event on April 13 called the Children's Service of Hope. That will be held at CAPS at 1000 W. Hively in Elkhart. They'll have a children's choir and gymnastics group perform.
