For years, Mark Miller has joked that his time as Rochester's football coach might soon be over.

Now, after 32 years, he's decided that it finally is.

His decision to retire as the Rochester football coach was hard enough, and then, he had to tell everyone.

"Walking into the group of kids I have for next year and telling them, ‘Guys, I'm not going to be the head football coach at Rochester next year,’ and then after, I took a short break. After three minutes, I could talk again."

Miller won a remarkable 208 games in 32 years as the Zebras head coach, but he remembers almost not making it passed year three.

"Well, a lot of guys at 2-and-28 would have hung it up, or been asked to hang it up."

But those at Rochester believed in Miller and stuck with him. They were right.

Just four years after a 2-win season, Miller had the Zebras in the state title game at the Hoosier Dome. It came down to a 40-yard field goal attempt in the final minute from Indianapolis Ritter that could force overtime.

"There was this big lump in my throat. When we saw it was wide right, it was a great feeling."

That 1987 state title trophy is Miller's prized possession, but it is not his prized memory. Those come from seeing the impact he's made in the lives of those around him.

Mark is now looking for a new memory. It includes coaching. Mark and his wife hope to soon relocate to Jacksonville, Florida, where Mark can become an assistant for his son. They wouldn't mind if a pretty big name came with.

"I think Peyton should consider taking his game to Jacksonville, and I'll become a full-fledged Jags fan at that time."

Miller will stay on as the Rochester athletic director until he can finalize a job and plans to head to Florida and join his son, Marcus.

The Zebras officially posted the head coaching job on Wednesday.
