As we get older, our skin begins to thin, often giving our hands an aged appearance; but there are things you can do to rejuvenate them and restore volume. Dr. Ronald Downs breaks down some of those ways in this week's Health and Beauty BreakDowns:

Filler Materials can help. These are usually injectables such as:

  • Restylane - a clear gel substance that is easy to inject and help to “plump” the skin. It is made up of hyaluronic acid, which is natural in our bodies. It only lasts about 6 to 9 months before needed re-injection.
  • Radiesse - another injectable with a slightly different make-up using hydroxyapatite, a fine crystalline material to provide volume. Again very easily injected and can last a little longer. The crystals are white in color and have to be placed slightly deeper in the skin.
  • Fat injections - very popular for restoring volume in the hands, essentially replacing what was lost. Fat requires a more complicated procedure. There is a donor site and more bruising and “down time.” It is long lasting that the previous two and studies show that the fat cells can actually stimulate collagen growth in the overlying skin.

Another cornerstone of hand rejuvenation is getting rid of those pesky prominent veins on the hands.

  • Sclerotherapy is an injectable of chemical into the veins to collapse them.
  • Laser vein treatment does the same using an external laser source.
  • Endovascular ablation is a new technology where a small wire to delivers radiofrequency or laser energy to the interior of the vessel is used to ablate or collapse the vessel.

These treatments do not affect circulation to the hands.

From a cost standpoint, the injectable filler depends on how much is required and need more than one treatment. These treatments can rand from $450 to $900 each. Of course fat injection can be more, costing $1,500 to $2,000. Ablation of the veins is equally expensive depending on the method.
