Police say it was unusual enough when they found the amount of marijuana in a Winamac man’s home to make more than 100,000 joints. But then it got even weirder.

Police also found more than 30 dead raccoons, some of them hidden in a freezer.

"And then frozen inside the freezer also were one pound bricks of marijuana that had already been compressed. There's, I think, ten or twelve of those with the raccoons,” explains Sgt. John Rogers, Pulaski County Sheriff Department.

Police are looking for 40-year-old Daniel Whited. He no longer lives at the home in the 6000 block of W. 500 South in Winamac but police say he was using it for his drug dealing operation.

Officials got a tip from a neighbor and headed to the house on Sunday. Police found $3.6 million worth of marijuana in every room of the house, including in the ceiling. In addition to the 610 plants, they also found 450 pounds filling ten garbage bins full of already processed, ready to smoke weed.

Whited shares the family land with his brother, who lives in another house next door. Whited’s sister-in-law says she was shocked when police brought her back to Whited barn.

"When they showed me what was in that barn, I collapsed," explains Jenni Richie, Whited’s sister-in-law. "I was so mad, so hurt, so unbelievable. I had no idea."

Police say Whited was probably storing the raccoons and hides until the price of fur went up. Officials explain it’s illegal to keep the animals 30 days after the end of the trapping season. That ended in February.

“He likes fishing and hunting and all that stuff and he'd get a deer and he’d call the boys over. ‘Tell the boys I got a deer and help me gut it,’" Richie explains. "He's still my kids' uncle. He's still my husband's brother."

But even so, Richie says Whited should turn himself in to police, serve his time and move on to better things in his life. Richie says Whited has four kids. She says it’s hard explaining to her own kids what they’ve discovered about their uncle, who they deeply love.

"We've told them people make mistakes. Sometimes, really big mistakes. And that's just what Uncle Danny did. He made a really big mistake and I'm sure he knows it," says Richie.

Police say Whited’s parents and ex-wife are not being cooperative in their search for Whited. They suspect other houses, locations and even people are probably involved in the drug ring. Officials say they don’t think all the marijuana was grown at this location. They also found $3.6 M worth of drug, but no cash. Again, that makes them believe other locations are involved.

Police also found seven illegal guns inside Whited’s house, some of them hidden under couch cushions. They found scales, lighting and other equipment used to grow marijuana. Officials say the windows were all covered and an air conditioner was running at all times. That, they say, is to keep the plants cool.

Whited was arrested last year for drug charges, which involved marijuana. He was also arrested for being a habitual traffic violated and invasion of privacy.

Police say Whited could be facing federal charges. They urge anyone with information to please call police with their tips.
