It started off as a wild fantasy five years ago, but now it's one of the area's biggest fundraisers for autism. Coming up on Friday, Ben Berger will play golf from sun up to sun down in the 5th and final Par for the Cause.
Ben threw out the first pitch at Saturday’s Silver Hawks game.
Berger is looking to golf 600 holes in one day on Friday, but the pitch wasn’t exactly as good as his golf game.
“That was a double bogey. Didn't quite get it there. I had a lot of arm but there's a lot of pressure out there. I play golf but I have not had that much pressure on the golf course. It was a little intimidating being out here,” said Berger.
At 32, this will be Ben's Grand Finale. The loss of 10 pounds a day and the aches and pains to the body of more than 2,000 holes in four days have aged Berger a little quicker than you know, a regular round of golf.
Ben also has some new challenges this year as he switches to Juday Creek from Eberhart. Eberhart is about 90 acres long while Juday Creek is 150 acres.
Berger will also be without his top assistant on the course. His wife Stephanie won't be available as she eight months pregnant and expected their couple's 2nd child.
The event has raised close to $200,000 in four years for LOGAN. Berger helps raise funds for the Sonya Ansari Center for Autism by encouraging people to pledge for each eagle, birdie and hole he completes. Anyone can sponsor Ben and also enter a raffle to win a $100 Hacienda Gift Card that will take place at the Par for the Cause GRAND FINALE just Click Here. This year, people can track their pledges online via LOGAN’s Twitter Page.
“When I started Par for the Cause in 2006, my goal was to play 250 holes of golf in one day,” said Berger. “But when I saw how quickly the community got behind me, I knew I could do even better. That first year, I smashed my goal by playing 450 holes. Each year I’ve pushed myself harder to help improve the lives of people living with autism in our neighborhoods, and I want to make the grand finale the one to remember.”
LOGAN encourages everyone to support Berger by coming out to Juday Creek Golf Course in Granger on Friday, June 25 anytime between sunrise and sunset. The Par for the Cause GRAND FINALE will also feature a scramble-style golf tournament and a “Par-Tee on the Patio” for $10 which includes food and beverages, family fun and live entertainment from local band Vehikle. Individuals and foursomes can register for the golf scramble by calling LOGAN Center at 574-289-4831.
