Fire broke out Sunday at a Shipshewana landmark.

A passerby noticed smoke pouring from a building on the grounds of the Shipshewana Auction and Flea Market around 5:40 p.m. Sunday.

The blaze destroyed a barn full of livestock-holding pens. The pens were empty at the time, but they will be sorely missed on what is typically one of the busiest times of the year at the auction.

“Wednesday and Friday we're planning on going, and of all weeks, we have one of our biggest Fridays coming up,” said Kevin Lambright of the Shipshewana Auction. “The horse sales this Friday, with Good Friday being it, and then the Friday after Thanksgiving, [are] two of the largest in the year. But that's the way life unfold itself and you deal with it and you work with it.”

It is likely many of the animals waiting for auction this week will be seeing a lot more of the great outdoors.
