Teven Watson scored 20 points and Jerron Jamerson added 16 as South Bend Washington finally ended its skid in the sectional finals, beating Penn 64-59 to win the 4A sectional championship at Riley.

Watson and Jamerson--both seniors--lost in the sectional finals as freshmen, sophomores and juniors. To make matters worse, the Panthers lost in the last five seconds each of the last two years. But this time, Washington wouldn't let that happen.

"I couldn't be happier," Watson said after the game. "I could cry right now."

As it turned out, it was his coach--Chad Johnston--who did get choked up as he saw his players raise the championship trophy. Johnston said after being on the short end of the stick the last three years, he couldn't help but feel incredibly happy for his kids.

Penn led 22-14 midway through the 2nd quarter, but Watson cut the deficit to three with a bucket at the buzzer just before halftime.

Washington came out on fire in the 3rd, opening up a seven point lead. But Penn would score seven points in the last 30 seconds of the quarter-- including a three from Jeff Laidig at the buzzer---to tie the game heading to the 4th. Laidig finished with 17 points.

Washington would build the lead to 10 in the 4th before Penn made another comeback. The Panthers didn't give in this time and celebrated the school's first sectional championship since 2002.

Washington will face Munster in the opening game of next Saturday's 4A regionals at Michigan City. Munster beat East Chicago Central in double overtime.

The other regional semifinal will feature Warsaw.

Nic Moore hit eight 3-points and finished with 28 points as Warsaw beat Memorial 55-50 to win the 4A sectional title at North Side Gym in Elkhart on Saturday.

"Nic Moore is no joke," Tigers head coach Doug Ogle said putting the junior guard's performance in perspective.

Moore hit a deep three pointer midway through the 3rd quarter that gave Warsaw a 14-point lead. But Memorial battled back and in the 4th, Urston Smith hit a three to make a one-point game.

Moore had the answer, draining a ridiculous 30-foot 3-pointer and Warsaw held on the rest of the way for the championship.

The Tigers will face either Valpo or Merrillville in regionals. That championship game is Monday night.
