If the hair's not on the top of your head, chances are, you're finding ways to get rid of it. Shaving can be a pain, but so are some other forms of hair removal like waxing and harsh chemicals.

The "Smooth Away" promises to be the easy, safe and painless way to remove hair, but would it rub you the wrong way?

The Smooth Away claims to be the best way to beat the blade. The large Smooth Away pad looks like a small, oval-shaped piece of fine sandpaper that is held on by adhesive on the back side of the pad. There's also a small one that comes with small pads for areas like the lip, ear or other parts of the body where hair grows.

For the purposes of this demonstration, I'm going to offer myself up as a guinea pig. I'm going to shave a little hair off my body using a regular razor and also using the Smooth Away. In a few weeks, we'll come back and compare one of the supposed benefits of the Smooth Away – no razor burn or razor cuts.

Using the razor gave me a pretty smooth shave. The Smooth Away comes with about a half dozen adhesive discs. The key to the Smooth Away is to not rub up and down or side to side, but use a circular motion, three times one way circular, three time the other. The benefit, besides removing the hair, is that the Smooth Away, according to the manufacturer, will exfoliate your skin making it feel softer and healthier.

So far, it's removing the hair. You're not supposed to use this on hair that's longer than more than a quarter inch, but it appears to be doing the job nonetheless. It feels smooth but I have to say, it feels like the razor side feels smoother right now, and the razor didn't take as long.

19 days after using both the razor and the Smooth Away, we took a comparison look. We've had a couple people look at the side of my leg that I shaved with a razor and the side that I used Smooth Away on, and they agree that you really can't tell much of a difference. So you can't draw much of a conclusion based on my legs, but how about somebody who shaves their legs regularly?

I asked one of our female producers, Kristina Uelk, to try the Smooth Away for two weeks. She shaved one leg with the Smooth Away and the other with a regular razor.

“I felt like it worked. It did the job but it took a really long time. I was joking with my husband saying it was kind of like mowing your yard with a pair of scissors, and it made my legs really, really dry,” says Kristina.

I asked Kristina if she would dare use it on any other sensitive part of the body, like it claims that you can.

"No way. I felt like it would give you a rash maybe in some areas if you used it," she says.

I asked Kristina if she would give it the thumbs up or thumbs down.

"I guess i would give it one thumb because it worked and one thumb down because it wasn't very quick," she says.

Kristina is being very diplomatic with the thumbs up thumbs down, but I'm not going to be that diplomatic. I don't think the Smooth Away is a very smooth operator, and it's going to get the thumbs down.
