UPDATE: Northeast Illinois earthquake downgraded to 3.8 magnitude

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed the epicenter of the quake was about 50 miles Northwest of Chicago at 4:59:34 EST Wednesday morning.

The U.S. Geological Survey has confirmed the epicenter of the quake was about 50 miles Northwest of Chicago at 4:59:34 EST Wednesday morning.

According to the government website, the magnitude was 3.8 and took place 1 mile SSE from Pingree Grove, IL, 4 miles SW from Gilberts, IL, 6 miles WSW from Sleepy Hollow, IL, 6 miles W from Elgin, IL, 21 miles NNW from Aurora, IL, and about 40 miles WNW from Chicago, IL.

The USGS says, "a magnitude 4.0 eastern U.S. earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 60 miles from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source. A magnitude 5.5 eastern U.S. earthquake usually can be felt as far as 300 miles from where it occurred, and sometimes causes damage as far away as 25 miles."

Several viewers from South Bend, Elkhart, Walkerton, Mishawaka, North Liberty, Bass Lake, and Baroda have called WNDU reporting that they felt the tremor. USGS officials took reports of people feeling the quake from as far as Iowa and Wisconsin. No injuries or damage have been reported so far.
