An Elkhart County man is accused of stealing a police officer's squad car.
It happened Sunday night in the 25,700 block of Kiser Court, on Elkhart's north side.
An officer was investigating a volatile situation involving 21-year-old Ryan Larson. His parents told a police officer that their son had ingested large quantities of prescription medications and alcohol.
While the officer met with his parents, Larson jumped in the patrol car and drove away. Police found the vehicle within seconds using GPS locators.
When they tried to intercept it, Larson crashed in a construction area, got out of the car and ran. He was caught by police a short time later.
Larson faces several charges including auto theft and operating while intoxicated. His blood-alcohol level was 0.10.
While the vehicle was stolen, all the weapons were secure and nothing was taken from the patrol car.
