As the death toll climbs in Haiti concerns are growing for some Michiana families still waiting to hear about their loved ones.

St. Mary's Director of Residence Life, Slandie Dieujuste, and her husband have about 50 relatives living in Haiti close to the earthquake's center. They haven't heard from any of them via phone or Facebook.

“I've been watching and I've been looking at all of these pictures (on the news) hoping that maybe I will recognize someone,” says Dieujuste.

Also another South Bend couple, Amber and Brandon Horne, were worried when the earthquake hit close to an orphanage.

They plan to adopt two children living at God’s Littlest Angels Orphanage in Haiti.

All of the children are okay but the adoption will likely be delayed indefinitely.

“Probably for the next two weeks or so we are not going to hear too much. Our agency is working with the U.S. government trying to figure out things,” explains Brandon Horne.

Also around twenty students at Andrews University are still waiting to hear about family members in Haiti.

Counselors are available on campus. Plus preliminary plans are in the works for students interested in travelling to Haiti to help with recovery efforts.
