It's a holiday tradition to put up Christmas lights for many households. Some sprinkle a few here and there while others go all out. One that is good enough to be a sensation on You Tube is in Michiana.
Dave and Kelly Hurt live on DuBois Drive in Warsaw. This year, their house has 4,000 lights and they are synched to the music of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Dave says it took them a full 24 hours to put up the lights, using a 6-channel controller and a laptop; and it’s the first year he’s taken on such a huge task.
“Next year we’ll take it up a few notches,” Hurt said. “We’re going to go to 10,000 lights next year and a 32 channel controller. A little bit more money, and probably twice the amount of work!”
There is also the annual tradition of lights throughout Winding Brook neighborhood in Mishawaka. The neighborhood has kept it going for more than 25 years! This year, donations from spectators go to 9 different charities:
- Alcohol and Addictions Resource Center (AARC)
- South Bend Center for the Homeless
- Children’s Dispensary
- Community Coordinated Child Care
- Family and Children Center
- Hannah’s House
- Home Management Resources
- In Source
- Tri-Kappa Epsilon Lambda Chapter
"Each resident has their own designs and its different every year, they're really beautiful,” said Barbara Dodson, a volunteer with Tri-Kappa.
There are 321 homes in Winding Brook and volunteers estimate about 90% of them are decorated this year. Some are simple while others have elaborate designs.
People can see the homes lit up until New Years Day, from 6-10 p.m. each night. Volunteers from those charities are on hand to collect the donations.
