The St. Joe County Humane Society held a food drive Saturday. Not for people, but for homeless cats and dogs.

Volunteers were out at the PetSmart on Grape Road and the Petco on University Drive in Mishawaka.

The Humane Society says supplies are short, and the number of cats and dogs at the shelter is up this time of year, so the need is great.

"People have been driving up and dropping off food that they bought previously for it. They've been going in and shopping for us,” said Melissa Bishop of the St. Joe County Humane Society. “We're just having everybody donate, and every bit helps."

The new Humane Society shelter will open in the summer, so cash and food donations are much appreciated.

If you'd still like to help out, they'll be taking donations next Saturday, December 12, at Paw Mart on S.R. 23 from 10 a.m. until noon, and at Pet Supplies Plus in South Bend from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
