South Bend residents discussed trends in crime in their city Thursday night at a public meeting.
Police say burglaries, larcenies, and vehicle thefts are on the rise, especially on the northwest side.
Officers say they're making progress. Since October, they've arrested 33 burglars and made 106 drug-related arrests.
The most surprising statistic is that many of the arrests are juveniles.
“In the last several days we've been getting a lot. We've had extra patrols and between our detectives and our NEST unit and our patrol guys, we've had several apprehensions,” said Sgt. Aaron Cassel of South Bend Police.
Police say often one person will burglarize several homes a night, which could mean we’d see a decrease in the numbers next month.
A new scam is teens offering to rake your leaves, when in reality, they're checking to see if anyone is home so they can burglarize it.
