Everyone will soon be able to get the swine flu vaccine. Until now, the vaccine was only available to people in high risk groups. Starting December 20th, anyone in Indiana can get vaccinated.
"I don't want to be sick and not be able to take care of my children. I'm a stay at home mom so I've got to be there and ready for my kids and ready to take care of them everyday," says Cheri Pickard, after her two kids get their vaccines at the Mishawaka County Services Building. "I definitely will get the H1N1 as soon as it's available for adults."
Indiana health officials say they now have enough vaccine to offer to people outside the high risk target groups. Pharmacies and doctors’ offices will soon be getting more vaccines as well.
"The more the better,” says Hass Hakim, pharmacist at Seifert Drug Store in Elkhart. “We have plenty of people to vaccinate. It will probably take a little pressure off those few pharmacists in town who actually give vaccines. We're plenty busy."
Students in the Elkhart County schools have already been vaccinated. Starting Friday, so will students in St. Joseph County. County health officials will begin by working with the John Glenn elementary schools. Then over the next few weeks, kids at PHM High School and students in the Mishawaka district will be vaccinated. In January after winter break, the rest of PHM students and South Bend students will have their turns. Officials say those districts have so many kids, they need more time to prepare so many vaccines.
People in the high risk categories can get the swine flu vaccine Thursdays December 10th and 17th from 8 o’clock a.m. until 6 o’clock p.m. on the 9th floor of the County-City Building in South Bend. Clinics will also be set up Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-11:00 a.m. and from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the County Services Building in Mishawaka.
In St. Joseph County, 17.5% of people in the high risk target groups have been vaccinated. That compares to 2.8% in Gary, Indiana and 37.6% in Union County. Also in St. Joseph County, 6.9% of people with chronic illnesses were vaccinated and 47.4% of healthcare and EMS workers chose to get the vaccine.
