Transitioning from prison is a difficult thing but one thing that can help is the faith people have to get them through such tough times. One local group is using the tools of faith and art to do exactly that for a number of prisoners.
"Companions on the Journey" is a faith-based group that prepares prisoners for release based on two big fundamentals. The first is the internal structure of a person and their faith. The second is their social structure and networks of social support once they're back in the community.
Rob Sambusky helps head the group that uses faith, and also art as another tool for transitioning. "Art heals. Art is the evidence of God's creative activity in the world" says Sambusky.
The group brings art created by prisoners and then holds shows, and silent auctions for the pieces. The next planned one is set for Dec. 4th from 5:30p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Trio's restaurant in downtown South Bend.
