It's a luxury many of us take for granted: warm winter coats this time of year.
But, a local radio station is taking to the airwaves and the streets to raise awareness about homelessness in Michiana to help those that don't have the luxury to own a winter coat.
Radio station Power 95.7 is teaming up with Youth Services Bureau of St. Joseph County for the fourth annual "Freezin' for a Reason" winter clothing drive.
Around 5 a.m. Friday, the crew got into place to begin setting up and raising awareness.
Power 95.7 DJs will be staying outside in front of the Krispy Kreme on Main Street in Mishawaka until 5 p.m. Sunday collecting any new or used coats, jackets, scarves, gloves or hats for young people and teens right here in Michiana, a demographic often over-looked when it comes to homelessness.
Youth Services Bureau Director Karin Fisher says, “We'll see 200 kids at our emergency teen shelter this year. It’s teenagers, kids and young adults too and when you think of homelessness you think either of small children or older folks but teens need help too.”
