It's tournament time for Notre Dame soccer. Thursday night, the men’s team hosts the first matchup in the NCAA tournament against Green Bay at 7:30 p.m. The #2 seeded women’s team hosts the Sweet Sixteen round of the NCAA tournament on Friday night against Oregon State at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be at Alumni Stadium.
Men’s soccer player Cory Rellas had an injury last season as a captain that put him on the sidelines. This season he came back, and got hurt again and had to have surgery.
“I think Green Bay is going to present a very strong matchup, they’re 14-2-3 over the season and we know it’s going to be a tough game, especially during tournament time. Every game is,” Rellas said.
Last year the women’s team was the national runner-ups. Head coach Randy Waldrum says he’s excited going into Friday’s Sweet Sixteen game.
“It’s an exciting time, we’re going to play a very good Oregon State team and it’s the first time ever to play them,” Waldrum said. “The interesting thing I think for us is they play at a really good conference out of the PAC 10 so it’s not going to be a team that’s going to come in and be intimidated by any means.”
Both Waldrum and Rellas are encouraging fans to come out to the games. This is the last chance for both teams to host games at home this season.
“I can’t tell you enough how important it is for the kids to be out there and see a stadium that’s completely full,” Waldrum said.
