Telling someone to “butt out” may seem rude, but when it comes to smoking it could be a life-saving statement.

Thursday is the annual Great American SmokeOut in which hospitals and health organizations all across the country urge you or someone you love to quit smoking.

Each year nearly 5.5 million people die of smoking, with Indiana being the second highest state in smoking related deaths.

While quitting is the hardest part, those who've done it say it's worth the challenge. "It's very difficult to quit and the average is between 5 and 7 times of trying before you're successful so it's very important if you haven't been successful before, just to keep on trying.," says Jill Sabo, Smoking Education Coordinator at St. Joe Regional Medical Center.

Marge Canfield, who smoked for 50 years and has finally kicked the habit for good, agrees. “I really didn't want to quit smoking because I always enjoyed smoking. But once I made up my mind I just wanted to quit and I did, but it's not easy by any means.”

Canfield is now smoke-free for more than 2 years.

If you're looking to quit or know someone that is, St. Joe Regional Medical Center in South Bend is offering free smoking cessation classes to help you kick the habit.

The number to call is (574) 239-5298.

You can also get a free kit to help kick the habit, just call 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
