The Mishawaka City Council was set to take up a proposal tonight that could double the fees for parking tickets, but they put off the issue until next month.
The Princess City's Police Chief is behind the plan. Police Chief Ken Witkowski wrote a letter to the city council requesting fine increases.
He says the cost of processing tickets is expensive. He's suggesting fines be increased from $5 to $10. Late fees after five days could go up from $15 to $25.
Meantime, a local business owner worries how his customers will react.
“I understand the need for time allotment and fees and things like that. It would be nice if there was more of a parking lot situation you know, if there was a spot that could be a parking lot I think that would help out the downtown area,” Mark Mendez owner of The Beanery said.
A public hearing on the parking ticket fee hike is scheduled for December 2.
