It would be hard to find a place with a higher per capita concentration of police officers than Warsaw, Indiana had on Monday.
The state’s law enforcement community turned out in full force to help the community bid farewell to Sgt. Jeff Shaw of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
Shaw died while on duty last week in a traffic accident.
“It’s almost as if God had a fate, because Jeff was real, being a sergeant, would have never normally been down that far in the southern part of the county that early beginning of the shift. Living on the west side of the county, usually sees his kids off and just as fate had it, he took the call for another officer, went down, and unfortunately, tragedy happened,” said Sgt. Chad Hill of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
In May of 2008, Sgt. Hill and Sgt. Jeff Shaw went to Washington D.C. to visit the National Law Enforcement Memorial.
Now, Shaw’s own memorial sits in front of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department headquarters in Warsaw.
“Hopefully it will get better, but there’s some tough times today and tomorrow,” Sgt. Hill said.
On Monday fellow officers, relatives, friends and community members all attended Sgt. Shaw’s viewing at the Warsaw Community Church.
“I just think we just need to make sure we keep his family in our prayers you know,” said Kosciusko County Sheriff William “Rocky” Goshert. “He’s got two young kids, a daughter seven and a son, nine. It’s a very young family so they’re going to have a real rough time of it.”
A sign outside of Conley’s Barber Shop in Warsaw Monday paid tribute to Shaw as a “great officer, dad, and husband,” not to mention—a customer.
“With having Jeff and his son in just last Saturday and then, now Jeff’s not coming home it’s pretty traumatic,” said barbershop owner Bob Conley. “It’s been tough on the community. People in this community are so supporting and so loving, that people want to stop by and take their picture with the sign and they stop in just to give you a thumbs up.”
Monday, Conley’s was giving free haircuts to law enforcement officers as the businesses’ way of helping with Tuesday’s funeral.
Although Bob Conley is a reserve police officer for Kosciusko County, and an elected Kosciusko County Commissioner—Conley wasn’t aware that Shaw held elected office.
Jeff Shaw was elected to the Prairie Township Advisory Board in 2005, and was finishing the third year of his term.
Shaw's funeral is Tuesday at 11 at Warsaw Community Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. A memorial fund has been set up for his wife and two kids. People can donate at any First Source Bank location.
