The “Can the Van” food drive at the YMCA brought in food donations for the Salvation Army. Inside the YMCA on Saturday, a row of decorated boxes boasted various food items donated during the drive.
"Need really knows no season, I mean there's need every year, but it seems a lot greater right now,” said Major Steve Woodard with the Salvation Army. "Every little can, every boxed dinner helps go a lot further than you could ever imagine,” he said.
Many who came by the YMCA on Saturday also brought donations.
"If I can help one person maybe just have something to eat, where it's not such a struggle, and if they don't have any money, that's all the more reason to donate" said Kari Yoder, a YMCA member.
The Salvation Army has seen need for its services jump from a year ago, but Major Woodard says he’s confident the people of Elkhart will help out those who need it most.
"Elkhart County has seen tough times before, and they're gonna rise above it but it's because people stand up and say I can make a difference,” said Woodard.
Folks can still drop off food at the YMCA of Elkhart County.
