As the holidays grow near, many people are already making plans for trips home to celebrate with family.
For one Stevensville family, that journey made a pit stop on the set of Regis and Kelly Live Monday morning.
The winners of the show's "Home for the Holidays" makeover contest will be on Regis and Kelly all this week; and 20-year-old Sarah Bond, who grew up in Stevensville, was the first winner!
We caught up with Sarah's mother, Maryanne Mabry, last week.
Mabry signed her daughter up for the contest, and she says this comes at exactly the right time.
Sarah got married last year, to a man she’d known for about 10 months.
“He's a really great guy, she's lucky,” Mabry said of Noah Bond, who is from Niles.
Even more quickly, Sarah and her Noah moved to Tacoma, Washington.
They didn't really have a choice.
“Her husband is stationed at Fort Lewis, and she's kind of isolated out there, she doesn’t live on base, so she doesn't have a lot of friends out there yet,” Mabry said.
What's more, Noah is slated to be deployed to Afghanistan next spring.
That's about the same time Sarah will have their first child.
“She's pregnant, and she's you know she's down a little bit because she's not near her family. So I thought this might be a good thing for her kind of pick up her spirits,” Mabry said.
The show picked Sarah as one of the winners. Mabry had signed her up for the contest without her even knowing.
“At first she was shocked because I said, ‘They're calling you in five minutes, let me tell you what I did.’ She said, ‘Mother!’” Mabry said.
But Sarah was overjoyed to get to fly to New York and be transformed by a professional stylist.
“Are you sure you’re five months pregnant?” Kelly Ripa asked after Sarah came on stage.
“It’s like two different women,” Regis Philbin said as the ‘before’ photo popped up on to the screen.
Ripa asked Sarah to look at the camera and tell her mom hello, but she then found out she could do it person. The show flew Mabry out as a surprise.
“I haven't seen her since she found out she was pregnant. It's just kind of hard, she's my youngest and she's the farthest away… I just want to give her a hug, you know,” Mabry said last week, before she left for New York.
“I'm just really happy for her, because she really needed something to boost her up,” Mabry said.
The show also flew Sarah’s sister out to New York to help her go shopping over the weekend in preparation for the show. They all get to stay until Tuesday, to spend a little extra time together.
Meantime, Maryanne says Noah’s reaction was, 'You're flying all the way across the country to get your hair cut?'
Sarah’s coming back to Stevensville for Christmas, too. That was the concept of the contest, to get a makeover before you come home for the holidays.
