Nappanee will honor a fallen officer Tuesday.
Sergeant Brant Allen “Butch” Nine was shot and killed in the line of duty on November 3, 1988.
It happened when he and another officer responded to a call of someone trying to pass a bad check at a jewelry store. Officers say when he went into the store and tried to arrest the suspect he grabbed Nine’s gun and shot him once in the chest. Nine died in the hospital from his wounds.
The suspect was later sentenced to 65 years for murder and 45 years for attempted murder. In August of 2009, he was denied parole.
The annual remembrance service for Sergeant Nine is at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Nappanee Police Department at 310 West Lincoln St. The public is invited to attend.
Police say the other responding officer, Phillip D. Hochstetler, was killed in the line of duty while serving with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department on June 29, 1994.
