The scariest part of Halloween for dentists is cavity-causing candy.
So, one area dentist's office has a trick up its sleeve to make kids happy and also treat troops overseas.
At Bridgman Family Dental Care, two dentists are taking a stand against sweets. They are hosting the third annual Great Halloween Candy Buy-Back Program.
On Monday, kids can bring in candy they collected from trick-or-treating. For every pound of candy they donate, the dentist office will give them a dollar.
All the candy will be sent to troops overseas.
"We got a letter back last year from a troop that was over in Iraq and said 'thank you, thank you, we were glad to be remembered,'" said Dr. Neal Smith of Bridgman Family Dental Care. "And they also then said they were taking the candy and giving it to kids. They were making friends with the kids there. They don't eat all the candy. They give away to the kids and the kids then will tell them, 'is there a roadside bomb?' 'The bad guys are over there.' So not only is the candy bringing encouragement to the troops, it's actually saving lives."
The goal is to collect a thousand pounds of candy this year.
Dentists also want to remind kids to eat small portions of candy and brush really well, especially before bed.
