They've already started calling it a 'village inside the city,' but now it will finally have people.
The first tenants will move into apartments at Eddy Street Commons starting Saturday.
"The Foundry West" will be the first of three apartment buildings at Eddy Street Commons, the other two are slated to open next spring.
A spokesperson says the building is already 75%; site unseen. The tenants signed up after just reading descriptions online.
The apartments run anywhere from $1,190 a month for a basic one-bedroom to $2,655 a month for the most expensive three-bedroom.
They say they built the apartments with an "urban contemporary" design. There are 17 different floor plans in the buildings, with the goal of giving each apartment a unique feel.
There are also a lot of shared amenities; from a full-size kitchen, to meeting rooms, to a fitness center and pool table.
They wanted to make sure they had everything ready for this weekend.
“It was demand, everyone wanted this going now,” said Helenann Klukowski, Assistant Manager of The Foundry. “Actually they've been trying to move in all week, but (Saturday) is opening day and everyone's so excited and so are we, to let everyone in.”
Klukowski says the tenants so far are a cross-section of people; grad students, professors, alumni or just local young professionals.
You have to be 21 or older to live there, and the average age so far is around 38.
Tenants there will have exclusive access to certain levels of a parking garage, separate from folks who are just visiting.
Meantime, we also found out today that the garage will be available for public parking at Notre Dame home football games for $40 a spot. But, tailgating won't be allowed.
