The South Bend concert featuring Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp and Willie Nelson drew thousands of people from all over the country. So too did Red Bud National in Buchanan, Michigan.

The concert at Coveleski Stadium brought more than 8,500 people inside the gates—a record crowd for the ballpark, according to the show's promoter. Red Bud organizers say they had record numbers of campers this year, and attendance was higher than last year.

What did it mean for local businesses? One store owner said it was like a second Christmas, thanks to spectators like Dylan First.

First, from Louisville, Kentucky, estimates he spent 800 dollars on his South Bend hotel and groceries. He arrived in Buchanan on Wednesday and left town Sunday.

He wasn’t alone.

“1100 dollars I’d say, between everything,” said Jason Henze, an amateur motocross rider from Illinois.

That everything includes groceries and gas.

“We’ve nearly doubled business in the last 4 or 5 days,” said Richard Harris, who works at a BP gas station in Buchanan. “It’s a strong impact on the area big time.”

For those that didn’t camp out in Buchanan, many chose to sleep in hotels in South Bend and Roseland.

Hampton Inn and Swuites was booked solid on Saturday night, with an estimated 80 percent there for Red Bud. Of course, the 4th of July concert filled hotel rooms as well.

"They came in in the morning, they ate and took their trip there and then came back afterwards,” said Teresa Pyburn, a bartender at Quality Inn. “We were swamped yesterday.”

Between sleeping and concert-going, folks stopped by at least one South Bend institution for a bite to eat.

"It was really really busy, a lot of people from out of town were just excited to be downtown and be here for the concert,” said Kate Davidhizar, assistant manager at South Bend Chocolate Company.

“It was way more people than we had anticipated coming," she said.
