At least 25 people were injured when a wooden pedestrian bridge collapsed following a 4th of July fireworks show in Merrillville Saturday night.
Rescue crews rushed to the scene at Hidden Lake Park, pulling several people, including children, out of the lake.
No one was killed, but as many as 50 people were dumped into the lake when the bridge gave way.
Injuries ranged from lacerations to broken bones.
Some 50 emergency vehicles responded, with dive teams helping pull people out of the water, and helicopters were brought in to provide light for rescue workers.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene -- saying the 90-foot long bridge was full of people just before it collapsed.
"After the fireworks he told us, now ya'll can go across. So, we were walking across, holding onto the sides and all of the sudden, the bridge started shaking and fell," explained one witness.
A township trustee says, the wooded bridge can handle about 40 people at any one time, but twice that number were on it when it collapsed.
He added police officers were stationed at either end but the crowd rushed them.
