A busy intersection in Elkhart was closed Wednesday evening after a stretch of pavement buckled.
Crews were called to the intersection of Bristol Street and Jeanwood Drive around 5:00 p.m. after residents in the area reported a loud noise.
When they got there, crews found a portion of the road about two feet wide across all four lanes had buckled.
Officials couldn't say for sure what happened, but they are searching for broken gas lines.
Residents who called in the noise said it sounded like an explosion.
"We had multiple calls on this. One person called and said their house blew up. Another person called and thought it was a propane tank exploding. That's how we got the initial call," explained Elkhart Battalion Chief Wes Johnson.
Investigators also haven't ruled out heat as a factor.
Right now the road is blocked off at the intersection. Crews will resume work in the morning.
