Shoppers and employees at Family Dollar on Edison and Hickory got quite the scare Monday afternoon when a car came crashing through the store's glass windows.
"My first reaction was, "Oh my God!" says Kevin Sholley who saw the crash.
Police say, around 1:45 Monday afternoon a 67-year-old Joseph Makowski was pulling into a handicap parking spot when he accelerated and drove through the store, hitting a woman and two children who just exited the store.
26-year-old Charissa Heeter is still in critical condition with serious leg injuries.
Her family members say she is in a lot of pain, and has had major surgery.
Heeter's four-year-old daughter is recovering at home from scrapes and bruises.
And her five-year-old niece is in stable condition in the hospital with a cut on her head.
"He was attempting to park and at some point in the parking process, something went haywire and a car ended up in the building," explains Captain Phil Trent, South Bend Police.
"I froze for a couple seconds and started screaming and then I ran over to the kids to make sure they were okay," explains Sylesta Morgan, who was on her way into the store.
Neither the driver or his wife, the passenger, is hurt and police have not made any charges. The FACT team was called. While we know that group as the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team, police say they also look at other things such a drugs and prescription drugs. That means, officials don't necessarily think there's something criminal here.
"It's a shock!" says Maralee Goodnight who was about to walk into the store. "It's very scary cause that could have been us a couple minutes, you know, later."
