2009 is the International year of Astronomy, and some Penn-Harris Madison students are taking it pretty seriously with a big project on outdoor light pollution in the community.
On Monday night they presented the results of their "Let There Be Night" project to the PHM school board with a 3D image representing the night sky in the corporation, made up of over 35,000 Legos.
During the past three months, 3400 students participated in the project by observing the night sky and calculating the darkness by the number of stars they could view.
"It was fun and I learned that there is a lot of light pollution in this town and there's a lot of things we can do to help it," said Rebecca Norman of Bittersweet School. "We have learned that you can cover lights to cut down not only the cost of running lights, but saving the sky."
